Our Story
Queens Gettin’ Lit! (QGL!) is a literacy based intervention curriculum and business entity. QGL! exposes third through fifth grade Black schoolgirls to diverse literary based experiences inspired by Black history, culture, and community. The program is purposed to inspire and motivate a community of future Queens by facilitating activities that develop cultural heritage identity, knowledge and appreciation, along with agency through literature, dialogue, and positive interactions with their peers and women of color. Students in the program get an opportunity to engage in reading comprehension and writing skills through planned activities. As the program title states, students involved are empowered to see themselves as Queens through their increased reading comprehension, vocabulary, and general learning of literacy. i.e. Lit. The term “lit” also serves a dual purpose. While the term “lit” is short for the word “literacy”, “lit” in popular culture also means: popular, hot, and the best.
QGL! was established in the Fall of 2018 and was the focus of a doctoral research study by the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. D’Andrea Nicole Robinson, who completed her degree in December 2019 at San Francisco State University. Dr. Robinson tested the QGL! curriculum based on the experiences of the elementary student participants to determine the impact of the curriculum in the areas of cultural heritage knowledge, cultural heritage agency, and academic progress.
Queens Gettin’ Lit! is currently located at one elementary school site and is affiliated with the Boys & Girls ClubS of San Francisco. Queens Gettin’ Lit! curriculum adheres to the organization's intent which is to expose students to Black history, culture, community, and self. Taking a deeper look at the curriculum’s activities, the content supports students’ academic learning by having students summarize, analyze, and engage in creative writing activities to build literacy skills.
