Program & Curriculum
The Queens Gettin’ Lit! curriculum is aligned with Common Core’s English Language Arts standards which emphasize students’ ability to integrate knowledge and ideas along with identifying key ideas and details when reading expository and narrative text. It also targets the third through fifth grades to support students’ critical thinking and higher order thinking skills development.
Black girls’ academic experiences are at risk! Current public education curriculum content focuses on Eurocentric people and culture and does not include Black history and cultural heritage experiences. QGL! encourages cultural appreciation and bolsters academic confidence. It is also a step towards honoring “Africentric values” while encouraging a solid, positive understanding of self, which produces pride. Queens Gettin' Lit! intends to shift the way Black girls view themselves and their future. Research studies have shown that racial identity largely determines the relationship with academic achievement because of the connection between cultural understanding and academic performance. Researchers have also identified a connection between Black female students with a strong appreciation for Black culture and exhibiting academic confidence. |
